Detection limits of RDTs

RDT evaluationby WHO requires tests to identify 75% of cases at parasite concentration of 200 parasites/μl. It is important to note however that fevers may be present at lower parasite levels (particularly in non-immune travellers). Therefore, for the detection of P.falciparum using approved tests, the lower limits of detection are not sufficient to confidently exclude infection. For non-falciparum species tests are less reliable.

These limitations are also summarised in the Table on the main page.
